"Tristan, can you hear me?"
That was Devon's voice and Tristan grabbed onto the one thought and struggled out of the darkness. The first thing he realised was that he was lying down. The second was that Devon was leaning over him. He tried to move and discovered that he was very firmly secured to the bench on which he was lying. It took him a little longer to realise he was in Billings' lab.
"Tristan?" Devon asked again and patted his face with a gloved hand.
"Yes."
He was shocked when he actually managed to say something.
"It's the G-energy," Devon told him in a very urgent tone; "it's fighting back the nanite infection."
The urge to ask about nanites and what the hell was going on was strong, but Tristan doubted he had time.
"They're tenacious little buggers though, reproducing faster than you can kill them," Devon explained. "You need to keep fighting. Billings has an idea, but you need to keep fighting, understand?"
Tristan managed a vague nod, since his tongue refused to work a second time.
"Focus, concentrate and bring up your power. It's not going to be pleasant, but it will work."
He nodded again and tried to remember everything Devon had been teaching him.
"Good," Devon told him, clearly aware of exactly what he was doing.
"Major, please move out of the way," came from off to the side, but Tristan could only concentrate on one thing at a time at the moment.
"Keep going," Devon told him as he felt his cells begin to hum.
He felt bereft as Devon left his eye line, so he closed his eyes and simply focused.
"Are you sure this will work?" he heard someone else ask.
"There is a sixty percent chance," Billings replied, "which is better than the zero percent we had before Mr Havering arrived."
For once he was glad he couldn't really think; it didn't give him an opportunity to worry.
"In five, four, thee, two, one."
Everything went white.
It was not as if he was seeing light, or white noise, everything was just white. Every part of him perceived white as if existence had just exploded into empty whiteness. Then it was gone and so was consciousness ... again.

Tristan felt like complete crap and all his senses seemed to be on overdrive as he smelt stale sweat and blood and tried to open his eyes only to feel as if someone was sticking pins in his eyeballs. His clothes felt as if they were made of sandpaper and he was reminded of that time he had had a nasty case of the flu. Wondering vaguely if he had been hallucinating again he finally managed to open his eyes.
He quickly gathered that it hadn't been all in his head when he found himself in a makeshift cot at the side of Billings' lab. There was an IV in the back of his hand and several monitoring devices on various places, but significantly he was not strapped down.
"Welcome back, Mr Havering," Billings said and he blinked up at the scientist rather blankly.
"What happened?" he asked, because his memory was very fuzzy.
